Working in Inglewood

Infinity Electrical is a licensed electrical contractor serving homes, rental buildings and businesses in Inglewood, with panel upgrades, EV charger circuits, rewiring, lighting and troubleshooting. Inside city limits the permit comes from the City of Inglewood's Building Safety Division, and Southern California Edison supplies and delivers the power, since Inglewood is not on SCE's list of Clean Power Alliance communities.

Inglewood incorporated in 1908 and is now better known for SoFi Stadium, the Kia Forum and the Intuit Dome than for its housing, but the houses and apartments are where most electrical questions start. Regional housing data prepared by SCAG and pre-certified by the state for Inglewood's 6th-cycle housing element, based on 2014 to 2018 census survey estimates, puts 18.5% of the city's housing units before 1940, 15.5% in the 1940s and 20.0% in the 1950s. Only about 4% were built in 2000 or later. Wiring from those decades was laid out for a far lighter load than central air, an electric dryer, a kitchen full of countertop appliances and a car charger.

The same data shows a city of renters: 64.4% of occupied units are renter households, and 41.1% of all units sit in buildings of five or more apartments, with another 14.3% in duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes. Single-family detached houses make up 38.1%. So in Inglewood a panel or service question can as easily come from a building owner or property manager as from a homeowner. Infinity Electrical Inc. (CSLB #1100231) looks at the service, the meter equipment and the existing circuits in person before quoting. Customer assistance is available in English and Spanish.

What's common in Inglewood homes

Inglewood's housing splits almost evenly between older single-family streets and apartment buildings, and each side brings its own electrical work.

  • Pre-war and postwar houses. More than half of Inglewood's housing predates 1960 in the SCAG data, with neighbourhoods like Morningside Park, Century Heights and Inglewood Knolls among the city's named residential areas. Houses of that age often have fuse panels or early breaker panels, ungrounded circuits and additions wired off whatever circuit was closest. Our guide to Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels covers two brands that still turn up in houses of that period.
  • Apartment buildings and small rentals. With 41.1% of units in buildings of five or more apartments and 14.3% in two-to-four-unit buildings, a lot of Inglewood's electrical work happens at a meter bank rather than a single panel: worn tenant subpanels, house-panel circuits for laundry and common lighting, and requests to add charging in a carport or garage. The data also counts 14.2% of renter households as overcrowded, which can mean more appliances on the same circuits at the same time.
  • Homes near the airport. Lennox, which meets Inglewood along Century Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, sits beneath the LAX flight path according to Wikipedia. On the Inglewood side of that line, adding air conditioning or ventilation circuits to a house that keeps its windows shut starts with checking what the existing service can carry.
  • Downtown and the event district. Market Street in Downtown Inglewood, the Metro K Line stations at Fairview Heights, Downtown Inglewood and Westchester/Veterans, and the area around SoFi Stadium, the Kia Forum and the Intuit Dome are where storefronts, restaurants and offices need lighting, signage circuits and tenant-improvement wiring; see commercial electrical work.
  • Very few mobile homes. The SCAG data counts 209 mobile homes, about half a percent of the city's housing, so the notes on this page focus on conventional houses and apartment buildings.

Permits and power in Inglewood

Inglewood (ZIP codes 90301 to 90312) is an incorporated city that issues its own building and electrical permits, and the 211 LA County listing for the city's electrical permits describes them as covering contracted work done within city limits. ZIP codes alone don't settle jurisdiction here: Wikipedia gives Lennox, which is unincorporated county land, the ZIP code 90304, inside the same 90301 to 90312 range. Before quoting, we check the parcel to see whether the job belongs to Inglewood or to Los Angeles County.

Permits. The City of Inglewood runs an online Citizen Portal on the Accela platform with Building, Planning, Public Works and Code Enforcement areas; full use requires a registered account. For chargers, Article 18 of the Inglewood Municipal Code (Ordinance 21-04) sets up expedited permitting for EV charging stations: the Building Official keeps a checklist based on the state's plug-in electric vehicle permitting checklist, an application that meets it is treated as complete, and electronic submittal by email or online is allowed. We coordinate the permit and the inspection as part of the job.

Who supplies the power. SCE's community choice page lists the cities that partner with Clean Power Alliance, including Hawthorne and Culver City, along with unincorporated Los Angeles County, and Inglewood is not among them; Clean Power Alliance's October 2025 announcement of its newest cities, which brought it to 38 communities, doesn't name Inglewood either. An Inglewood bill therefore normally shows SCE for both generation and delivery, while a bill across Prairie Avenue in Lennox may name Clean Power Alliance as the supplier. Either way SCE owns the service drop and the meter, so a service upgrade or meter relocation is coordinated with SCE.

An overhead-wire city in places. A 2021 utilities report prepared for the city's Inglewood Transit Connector project mapped SCE overhead and underground lines and SCE streetlights along Prairie Avenue, Manchester Boulevard and Market Street. Where an older house is fed by an overhead drop and the service mast or weatherhead has to change with a panel upgrade, SCE's side of the work is scheduled along with ours.

The permits and utilities guide explains the whole picture for the three counties we serve.

Around Inglewood

Inglewood's edges change the paperwork more than the work. Westchester, on the west and home to LAX, is a City of Los Angeles neighbourhood, so permits there come from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) and power from LADWP, not SCE. Lennox, View Park-Windsor Hills, Westmont and most of Ladera Heights are unincorporated Los Angeles County communities: LA County Public Works issues their electrical permits through its EPIC-LA system, SCE delivers the power, and as unincorporated county land they fall in Clean Power Alliance's area. Hawthorne, to the south, is a separate city and a Clean Power Alliance member. We confirm the permit office and the supplier from the address before quoting.

Questions people ask

Is Inglewood a Clean Power Alliance city?

No. SCE's list of Clean Power Alliance partner cities leaves out Inglewood, so Southern California Edison normally provides both the electricity and the delivery. Hawthorne, Culver City and unincorporated areas next door such as Lennox and Ladera Heights are in Clean Power Alliance's area, which is why a neighbour's bill can look different.

Who issues electrical permits in Inglewood?

The City of Inglewood Building Safety Division, for addresses inside city limits. The city also has an online Citizen Portal with a Building module. We coordinate the permit and the inspection as part of the job, and an EV charger circuit needs one too, as our article on EV charger permits explains.

My mailing address says Inglewood, but I live in Lennox. Which rules apply?

Los Angeles County's, because Lennox is unincorporated even though its ZIP code, 90304, falls inside Inglewood's 90301 to 90312 range. LA County Public Works issues the electrical permit there, so we check the parcel's jurisdiction before the estimate.

Our house went through the LAX sound insulation program. Was the electrical updated?

Don't assume it was. LAWA's 2015 description of the program's typical work lists windows, doors, fireplace doors and dampers, attic baffles and insulation among other elements, and doesn't mention panel or wiring upgrades. If you're adding air conditioning or other loads after the insulation, a check of the panel and a load calculation comes first.

Can you add EV charging at an Inglewood apartment building?

Yes, for owners and managers, usually after a look at the building's service size and meter section. With about 41% of Inglewood's housing in buildings of five or more units, the options for a shared carport or garage run from a dedicated circuit per space to load-managed chargers or a service upgrade coordinated with SCE. More on that is on our EV charger page.
