Level 2 charging, done right

A Level 1 charger plugs into a regular outlet and adds only a few miles of range per hour. Nearly everyone who drives electric ends up wanting Level 2: a 240-volt charger on its own dedicated circuit that can fill most batteries overnight.

Installing one properly is an electrical job, not an accessory: the circuit has to be sized to the charger and to your panel, the run from the panel to your parking spot has to be planned, and the work is permitted and inspected.

What we check on the free visit

  • Your panel's capacity, with a load calculation, so the new circuit is safe alongside everything else in the home.
  • The route from the panel to where you park, and whether it needs conduit, trenching or a sub-panel.
  • Hardwired versus a plug-in outlet (such as a NEMA 14-50), and which suits your charger and location.
  • Indoor or outdoor placement and the weather protection it needs.
  • The charger you've chosen, or options if you haven't, including smart chargers that can schedule off-peak charging.
  • Whether a load-management device can avoid a panel upgrade when capacity is tight.

Homes, condos and businesses

Most of our EV work is at single-family homes, but we also install chargers for businesses, property managers and multi-unit buildings, where the questions become shared circuits, metering and how many vehicles will charge at once. See commercial electrical for that side of the work.

What changes the price

  • Distance from the panel to the charger location and how the wire gets there.
  • Whether your panel has the capacity or needs a panel upgrade or load-management device.
  • Hardwired versus an outlet, and the charger's amperage.
  • Trenching for a detached garage or carport.
  • Permit fees in your city.

We pull the permit, coordinate your utility when needed, and finish with the inspection.

Questions people ask

Do I need a panel upgrade to install an EV charger?

Not always. It depends on your service size and what else is on it. The load calculation during the free visit tells you. When capacity is tight, a load-management device can sometimes let a charger share the service without a full upgrade.

Can you install a charger I already bought?

Yes. Bring the model number to the visit and we'll confirm the circuit it needs and whether it should be hardwired or plugged in.

Can the charger go outside?

Yes, with an outdoor-rated charger and the right enclosure and conduit. Many installs are on an exterior wall or a detached garage.

Does an EV charger need a permit?

In Los Angeles and most surrounding cities, yes. A new 240-volt circuit is permitted and inspected work. We take care of it.

Are there rebates?

Utilities and the state have offered EV charger and panel rebates at different times, and the programs and eligibility change. We'll tell you what applies when we visit rather than promise something that may have closed.

How long does the installation take?

Once the permit is in hand, a single home charger is usually installed in a day. Long conduit runs, trenching to a detached garage, or a panel upgrade add time.
