When a home needs rewiring

  • Knob-and-tube wiring, common in homes built before the 1950s.
  • Aluminum branch wiring from the 1960s and 70s, which can loosen and overheat at connections.
  • Cloth-insulated or brittle wiring, or wiring that has been spliced and patched over the years.
  • Two-prong, ungrounded outlets through most of the house.
  • Repeated problems: tripping, flickering, warm switch plates, outlets that don't work.
  • A remodel that opens the walls anyway, which is the most economical time to rewire.
  • An insurer or buyer who requires it.

Whole-home or partial

A whole-home rewire replaces the wiring, outlets and switches throughout, and usually goes with a panel upgrade so the new circuits have a proper home. A partial rewire targets one area or the circuits that are causing trouble. On the free visit we look at a representative sample of the wiring and tell you honestly which makes sense.

What a rewire involves

  1. A circuit plan: what goes where, including the dedicated circuits a modern kitchen, laundry and bathrooms need.
  2. New wiring run through attic, crawl space and walls, with openings kept small and planned.
  3. New outlets and switches, grounded, with GFCI and arc-fault protection where code requires.
  4. A rough inspection before anything is closed up, then the final inspection.
  5. Coordination of patching and paint so the finish is clean.

What changes the price

  • Size of the home and number of circuits.
  • Access: attic, crawl space, slab, and how the walls are built.
  • Whole-home versus a defined area.
  • Whether the panel needs upgrading at the same time.
  • Patching and finish work, and permit fees in your city.

Reach out

Call or send the form. A photo of the panel or the problem helps us come prepared.

STEP 02

Free on-site visit

We come to your home or business and look at the panel, wiring or site.

STEP 03

Written estimate

We pull the permit, coordinate your utility when needed, and finish with the inspection.

Questions people ask

Do I have to move out during a rewire?

Usually not. We plan the work room by room and keep power to the parts of the house we're not working in. For a full rewire there will be days with more disruption than others, and we tell you which in advance.

Can you rewire just one part of the house?

Yes. A kitchen, a bathroom, an addition or the circuits that keep causing trouble can be done on their own. The visit tells you whether a partial rewire makes sense or whether the rest of the wiring is in the same condition.

How long does a rewire take?

It depends on the size of the home, how accessible the walls, attic and crawl space are, and the inspection schedule. You get a timeline in the written estimate.

Does a rewire require a permit?

Yes, with a rough inspection before walls are closed and a final inspection at the end. We handle both.

Will there be holes in my walls?

Some, where wire can't be fished through. We keep openings as small and as few as possible, and we coordinate the patching so you aren't left with that problem.
