Call (844) 430-7681Request an estimateInfinity Electrical is a licensed electrical contractor taking on panel upgrades, EV charger installs, rewiring, troubleshooting and commercial electrical work in South Gate. The City of South Gate's Building & Safety Division issues the electrical permits, and Southern California Edison is the utility for both delivery and, unless a customer chooses otherwise, the power supply itself.
The city's history page traces the name to the south gate of the Lugo family's Rancho San Antonio and dates the first subdivision, South Gate Gardens, to September 1917, when 268 parcels went on sale, most of them half-acre lots. The city incorporated on January 20, 1923, with roughly 2,500 residents. Factories followed quickly: Firestone produced its first tire here in June 1928, and the General Motors assembly plant opened in 1936 with 1,000 workers and later grew to 4,000.
That history shows up in the housing. The 2021–2029 housing element, citing Census survey data, puts about 65.7% of the city's homes as built before 1960 and nearly half between 1940 and 1959, and City staff estimate that roughly a quarter of units have deferred maintenance and outdated systems. A house wired in that era was planned around lights, a refrigerator and perhaps a washer, so adding a charger, central air or a heat pump usually begins with a look at the service. Infinity Electrical Inc. (CSLB #1100231) checks the panel, meter and wiring on site before writing an estimate.

South Gate mixes small single-family lots, a large rental market, apartment buildings, a mobile home zone and an industrial base that dates to the 1920s, and the electrical work follows from that mix.
South Gate (ZIP code 90280) is an incorporated city of about 7.4 square miles, with roughly 92,700 residents in the 2020 Census. The Los Angeles River and the I-710 freeway run through its eastern side and split off Hollydale, which the city's Hollydale Specific Plan places in the southeastern corner, bordered by Paramount to the south and Downey to the north and east. Cudahy lies along the city's north edge, Bell Gardens touches its northeast corner and Huntington Park also shares a border with it. Because several of those neighbours share streets with South Gate, we confirm which city a parcel actually sits in before quoting.
Permits in South Gate. The Building & Safety Division works out of South Gate City Hall, and its permits page names electrical improvements and temporary power poles among the work that needs a permit. The city enforces the 2025 California codes, including the Electrical Code. Inspections are requested by phone, while the city's Online Permit Counter, which needs a free account, is where permit status, plan check progress and inspection results can be followed. For a home addition over 500 square feet, the residential permit guide asks for two sets of electrical schematic plans, and work covering more than one dwelling unit must be signed for by a licensed contractor. We coordinate the permit and inspection steps with the job schedule.
EV chargers have their own path. In April 2026 the City Council adopted Chapter 9.14 of the municipal code, a streamlined permitting process for electric vehicle charging stations. It directs the Building Official to publish a checklist, gives complete applications priority review and lets an application for 1 to 25 chargers at one site be deemed complete if the city has not responded within five business days. The ordinance also says a charger cannot be energized until the city approves it and the utility signs off, and an inspection follows installation. For most South Gate homes, the more important question is whether the existing panel has room.
Edison, start to finish. SCE's service territory list includes South Gate, and the city is not among the 38 communities Clean Power Alliance listed in its August 2025 town hall presentation, so a South Gate bill normally shows SCE for both delivery and generation. On an existing service, SCE's project planning page routes a panel upgrade or meter spot through its online user guide and has customers call to remove or relocate SCE equipment. The residential permit guide also lists an Edison clearance among the agency approvals needed for additions.
Local landmarks are a live process here. The Los Angeles Conservancy's preservation scorecard gives South Gate full marks for having a historic preservation ordinance and for designating landmarks at least once a year, though the city has no Mills Act program and cannot designate historic districts. The Conservancy features the old Firestone Tire and Rubber plant. If an older building on Tweedy Boulevard or elsewhere is a designated landmark, exterior conduit, a new meter location or a service mast is something we raise with the Planning Division early.
The permits and utilities guide explains the whole picture for the three counties we serve.
All six neighbours appear on SCE's service-territory list, but the default power supplier is not the same everywhere. Downey and Paramount are Clean Power Alliance members, and Lynwood customers were moved to CPA in October 2025, with SCE still delivering the power and sending the bill. Cudahy has been invited to join CPA with service planned to start in 2027 or later. Huntington Park and Bell Gardens are not on CPA's community list, so SCE normally supplies the energy there as it does in South Gate. Our Compton and Long Beach pages cover cities farther south.

Yes: Chapter 9.14 of the South Gate Municipal Code, adopted in April 2026, creates an expedited, checklist-based process for EV charging stations, with priority review for complete applications. The charger still needs city approval and the utility's sign-off before it is energized, and an inspection after installation; our EV charger installation page covers the rest of the process.
No, South Gate is not on Clean Power Alliance's list of member communities, so SCE normally supplies the power as well as delivering it. Neighbouring Downey, Paramount and Lynwood are CPA members, and Cudahy is scheduled to join in 2027 or later, so a bill just across the city line can look different.
Usually yes, but only after a load calculation shows how much spare capacity the existing service has. Many South Gate homes date from the 1940s and 1950s, and the housing element reports that almost a quarter of households have more than one person per room, so kitchens, laundry areas and bedrooms often carry more appliances than the original wiring planned for. In a duplex or small apartment building, each unit panel and the house panel are checked separately. Depending on what we find, new circuits can go on the existing panel or wait for an outlet and circuit plan paired with a panel upgrade.
Not automatically, but it should be inspected, because a house of that age often has original wiring, ungrounded circuits or a panel that has been added to over the years. The housing element estimates that about two-thirds of South Gate homes predate 1960. We look at the panel, the wiring type and what you plan to add, then recommend repairs, partial rewiring or a whole-house job.
For a project that covers no more than one dwelling unit, the city's residential permit guide lets either the homeowner or a licensed contractor sign for and pay for the permit. Work on more than one unit, such as a duplex or apartment building, requires a licensed contractor. Infinity Electrical Inc. (CSLB #1100231) can pull the permit for the work we do.
Yes, we take on commercial and light-industrial work, including three-phase service where a building has it or needs it. South Gate's zoning map includes Light Industrial, Light Manufacturing, Heavy Manufacturing and Industrial Flex zones, and manufacturing was a leading job sector in the city's 2014 employment figures. Our commercial electrical page describes that work in more detail.
