Electrician in Anaheim

In Anaheim the city is also the power company, so a panel upgrade or EV charger involves both the City of Anaheim permit and Anaheim Public Utilities. Infinity Electrical works on houses, apartments, mobile homes and Anaheim Canyon businesses and coordinates those steps. Free estimates on eligible work.

Working in Anaheim

Anaheim is the one city in Orange County where the power company is the city itself. Anaheim Public Utilities, not Southern California Edison, owns the meters and lines, so panel upgrades and service changes follow the city utility's process, including a meter spot report and its own inspections.

Residents voted 103 to 5 in 1894 to start their own electric utility, and the city describes Anaheim Public Utilities as the only municipal electric utility in the county. Infinity Electrical Inc. (CSLB #1100231) looks at the job first and puts the price in writing after that. Census figures show that most occupied homes are rented (the owner-occupied rate is 46.2%) and that close to six in ten residents age 5 and over speak a language other than English at home. Customer assistance is available in English and Spanish.

What's common in Anaheim homes

Historic houses, mid-century tracts, hillside homes, mobile home parks and industrial buildings each bring their own electrical needs in Anaheim.

  • Houses in the historic districts. The city has four historic districts in central Anaheim, the largest being the Anaheim Colony, and certain houses in them are eligible for the Mills Act, which trades a property tax reduction for keeping the exterior historically accurate. Old wiring and small services are common, and we plan meter and panel locations with the street-facing exterior in mind, and Mills Act owners should check their contract terms before exterior changes.
  • West Anaheim's mid-century tracts. Original panels often run short once a heat pump, EV charger or remodel is added, which is where the load calculation comes in.
  • Rentals and apartment buildings. With most households renting, owners and managers often need work on meter banks, common-area panels and shared laundry circuits.
  • Mobile home parks. In 2019, a council presentation reported by the Fullerton Observer counted 27 mobile home parks in Anaheim with 3,483 spaces. HCD is the enforcement agency for mobilehome parks unless a city or county has taken that role over with HCD's approval, and we confirm which applies to your park.
  • Anaheim Canyon. This industrial district north of the 91 and east of the 57 is full of factories, warehouses and offices. Tenant changes often mean three-phase circuits, equipment feeders and warehouse lighting, and any larger service runs through APU Electrical Engineering.

Permits and power in Anaheim

Anaheim (ZIP codes 92801, 92802 and 92804 to 92808) has its own building department and its own electric utility: an August 2026 credit report on APU calls it the exclusive provider of electric service within the city. City limits matter more than the mailing address. Anaheim Island, a group of unincorporated neighborhoods, uses an Anaheim ZIP code but is not part of the city, so the parcel, not the mailing address, decides.

Panel upgrades on APU's system follow a set order. The city's residential panel upgrade page lists an electrical permit, which can be obtained online; the installation; city inspections for the service meter and the electrical final; and a meter spot inspection requested from Anaheim Public Utilities. The utility's meter spot report must be on site when the building inspector arrives. The city's overhead upgrade page adds that once the utility and meter shop inspections pass, a service crew is scheduled to energize the panel.

When the utility's side has to change, such as a bigger overhead drop, a relocated meter or a new underground service, APU's engineers prepare an electric service plan, which the city says generally takes 4 to 8 weeks, and the city permit must be finalized before that plan is issued for construction. The city's undergrounding pages also mention a Home Undergrounding (HUG) rebate; we confirm current eligibility with APU rather than assume it.

EV chargers start with a load calculation. The city's EV charger checklist says a licensed electrician should calculate whether the existing service can carry the charger; if it can, the job needs an EV charger permit, and if not, it follows the upgrade steps above. APU's private-use EV charger rebate application, dated May 2026, also covers a panel upgrade rebate when it is done with the charger, and asks for the building permit and final sign-off.

Commercial and industrial services go through APU Electrical Engineering, which assigns an Electric System Designer, prepares the service plan and reviews panel shop drawings, which must meet EUSERC standards, before equipment is bought. The city says these plans generally take 8 to 12 weeks.

Anaheim Hills and wildfire. A 2025 city environmental report notes that the municipal code designates all of Anaheim east of the 55 and south of the 91 as the city's wildland-urban interface. APU says it may temporarily shut off specific line segments as a last resort in dangerous fire conditions, with notifications if a Public Safety Power Shutoff is forecast; the August 2026 credit report says 98% of its lines in the highest wildfire risk areas are already underground. For hillside homes that want a plan anyway, a properly installed transfer switch or battery backup system runs essential circuits safely. A portable generator belongs outdoors only, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents, and connected through a properly installed transfer switch, never plugged into a wall outlet.

The permits and utilities guide explains the whole picture for the three counties we serve.

Around Anaheim

Orange, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Buena Park, Placentia, Yorba Linda and Stanton are separate cities served by Southern California Edison, so a panel upgrade there follows that city's permit process and SCE's, not APU's. Buena Park and Fullerton are also Orange County Power Authority members, which changes who supplies the power but not who owns the meter.

Questions people ask

Is Anaheim served by Southern California Edison?

No. Inside city limits, electricity comes from Anaheim Public Utilities, the city-owned utility, so panel upgrades and service changes follow APU's process.

What is an APU meter spot report, and why does my panel upgrade need one?

It is Anaheim Public Utilities' approval of where the new meter and panel can go, and it must be on site at the city's building inspection. We coordinate the request, the city inspections and APU's energizing in order. See panel upgrades.

Does APU offer a rebate for an EV charger or panel upgrade?

Yes, for now: APU's Private Use EV Charger Rebate guidelines, dated May 2026, include an electric panel upgrade rebate for APU electric customers who also apply for the EV charger rebate. The application asks for the building permit and the final sign-off card, and terms can change, so check APU's current form before you buy. See EV charger installation.

Does Anaheim Public Utilities shut off power for wildfire risk?

It can: APU says it may temporarily shut off specific line segments as a last resort in dangerous fire conditions and will notify customers if a shutoff is forecast. A transfer switch or battery backup can keep essential circuits running. See backup power.

How long does a commercial service upgrade with APU take?

Allow time: the city says APU's commercial service plans generally take 8 to 12 weeks, and the city permit must be finalized before the plan is issued for construction. See commercial electrical.
