Working in Camarillo

Camarillo sits in Pleasant Valley at the eastern end of the Oxnard Plain, with the Conejo Valley rising beyond it to the east. The town began around St. Mary Magdalen Church, built as the family chapel of Adolfo Camarillo, whose family owned Rancho Calleguas. It stayed small until after World War II, when the Ventura Freeway, the nearby military bases and a 3M plant brought steady growth, and the city incorporated in 1964. By the 2020 census it had 70,741 residents on just under 20 square miles.

That timing shows up in the houses. The city's 2021–2029 housing element, adopted in September 2021, finds that 47.9 percent of owner-occupied homes were built between 1960 and 1979, while only about one in eight went up in 2000 or later. A Camarillo house of that era may still have its original service, sized for a far lighter load than central air, a second refrigerator in the garage, an induction range and an electric car. Panel and wiring questions here are often less about something broken than about a house being asked to do more than it was built for.

Infinity Electrical Inc. (CSLB #1100231) begins each Camarillo job by looking at the service, the panel and the way the property is used now, and the written quote follows that visit. Customer assistance is offered in English and Spanish for homeowners, park residents and property managers who prefer either language.

What's common in Camarillo homes

About two-thirds of Camarillo homes are owner-occupied (65.8 percent in the 2020 census), and the city's housing element shows the largest share of owner-occupied homes dating from 1960 to 1979, alongside senior communities such as Leisure Village and several mobile home parks.

  • Tract homes from the 1960s and 70s. Homes from these two decades, around the city's incorporation, are the largest group of owner-occupied houses. The housing element says the age of the stock points to a greater need for maintenance and rehabilitation; electrically, that can mean an original panel, few kitchen circuits and garage or patio outlets without GFCI protection.
  • Mobile home parks. The housing element counts 1,020 mobile homes in Camarillo in 2020, about 3.7 percent of the housing, and lists Camarillo Mobile Home Park, Camarillo Springs Mobile Home Park, Casa Del Norte Mobile Home Park and Rancho Adolfo Mobile Home Park among the developments that accommodate senior residents; that list covers senior housing, not every park in the city. Work on a coach and work on a park's own distribution system follow different rules, so the right inspecting agency is confirmed before a job starts.
  • Leisure Village and senior communities. Leisure Village opened in 1973 as a retirement community and has 2,136 attached homes. Lighting that makes steps and hallways easier to see, outlets moved to a reachable height and dependable power for medical equipment are common needs in homes like these, and an association's rules on exterior work are checked along with the permit.
  • Business parks and light industry. Camarillo Airport, three miles west of downtown, began as Oxnard Air Force Base and is now a county-owned general aviation field with its own business park. Buildings like these may run on three-phase power for motors, compressors and production equipment.

Permits and power in Camarillo

Camarillo (ZIP codes 93010 to 93012) is an incorporated city, so a property inside city limits is permitted by the City of Camarillo rather than by Ventura County. The city's Building & Safety department runs its own permit system: as of July 1, 2025, new permits are no longer accepted through the older Click2Gov site or on paper, and applications go through the city's OpenGov portal instead. Permits filed before that date can still be looked up and inspected through Click2Gov.

City or county? The farm country around Camarillo is largely unincorporated. Somis, a short drive north along Somis Road, has no city government of its own, so electrical permits there come from the County of Ventura. After the 2024 Mountain Fire, the county noted that it and the City of Camarillo have similar but separate rebuilding processes, and pointed residents to its GIS map to see which side of the line a parcel is on. We check the parcel before quoting so the application goes to the right office the first time.

Power reaches Camarillo addresses over Southern California Edison's distribution system. Camarillo is a member of Clean Power Alliance, which buys the electricity for most local customers, while SCE sends the bill, delivers the energy and maintains the lines; CPA does not own or operate that equipment. For an upgrade, SCE takes panel and meter requests through its Building, Renovation and Project Planning Portal, and that request is coordinated alongside the city permit. New circuits, lighting and most repairs on the existing service never involve SCE.

Wind, fire and shutoffs. Two recent wildfires reached the Camarillo area. The 2013 Springs Fire started beside the Ventura Freeway on the Conejo Grade and burned about 24,000 acres, according to the National Park Service. In November 2024 the Mountain Fire spread from near Somis across State Route 118 into the Camarillo Heights neighborhood; of the 243 structures it destroyed, at least 83 were homes in Camarillo Heights. SCE has used Public Safety Power Shutoffs in this part of the county as well: in October 2019 it reported nearly 8,000 customers in the Camarillo, Fillmore, Santa Paula, Santa Susana and Simi Valley areas without power during one such event.

For households that want lights, the refrigerator and medical or work equipment to keep running through a shutoff, the safe options are a generator connected through a transfer switch or a listed interlock, or a battery backup system wired to chosen circuits. A portable generator belongs outdoors, well away from windows, doors and vents, and it must never be plugged into a house outlet to feed power back through the wiring. Infinity Electrical installs the hookup and transfer equipment; the generator itself comes from the homeowner's own supplier. Our comparison of transfer switches and interlocks explains the two approaches, and a shutoff preparation checklist covers what to sort out before the next wind event.

The permits and utilities guide explains the whole picture for the three counties we serve.

Around Camarillo

Somis, to the north, is unincorporated, so Ventura County issues its permits even though it borders Camarillo's housing tracts. Oxnard, to the west on the Oxnard Plain, and Thousand Oaks, to the east in the Conejo Valley, are separate cities; Thousand Oaks permits work through its own Building Division, and our Oxnard and Thousand Oaks pages cover each city's process. Ventura and Moorpark are separate cities too. Like Camarillo, all four belong to Clean Power Alliance, with SCE delivering the power.

Questions people ask

How do I get an electrical permit in Camarillo now that Click2Gov is gone?

New permits are filed through the City of Camarillo's OpenGov portal, because the city stopped accepting new applications through Click2Gov and on paper on July 1, 2025. Permits opened before that date still use Click2Gov for lookups and inspections. On a job with Infinity Electrical, the application and inspections are coordinated as part of the work.

My home was in the Mountain Fire area. Does the city or the county permit the electrical work?

It depends on which side of the city limit your parcel is on, since the County of Ventura and the City of Camarillo run similar but separate rebuilding processes. Somis and other unincorporated areas go to the county; addresses inside Camarillo go to the city. We confirm the jurisdiction from the parcel before the estimate, and our backup power page covers transfer switches and battery systems for a rebuilt home.

Can I run my house on a generator during an Edison shutoff?

A generator can safely power chosen circuits only when it is connected through a transfer switch or a listed interlock that keeps it isolated from SCE's lines. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet, and keep it outdoors away from windows, doors and vents. Shutoffs have reached the Camarillo area before, so it helps to have the hookup installed before a Red Flag forecast rather than during one.

Do you work inside Camarillo's mobile home parks?

Yes, electrical work in mobile home parks is part of what Infinity Electrical does, for coach owners and for park management. Camarillo's housing element names four parks among its senior housing, including Camarillo Springs and Rancho Adolfo. Because park systems and individual homes are regulated differently, the inspecting agency is confirmed first; see mobile home electrical.

Is my 1970s Camarillo house ready for an EV charger?

Often it can be, but only a load calculation on your actual panel answers that. A Camarillo home from that decade may still have its original service, and a Level 2 charger adds a large, long-running load. If the panel is short on capacity, the choices are load management or a service upgrade coordinated with SCE; see EV charger installation.
