Studio City is two neighborhoods split by Ventura Boulevard. North of it are the flats: tracts like Laurel Terrace and Agnes Avenue, built in the late 1920s and 1930s for people working at the studio lot that is now Radford Studio Center, then post-war houses and courtyard apartments on the last of the farmland. South of it the ground rises into the Santa Monica Mountains, and the canyon streets are almost all single-family homes.
Those hills are on the Fire Department's list of communities in the city's Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. For electrical work that means questions about outdoor equipment and wiring extended down a slope over decades, alongside the remodels, chargers and panel replacements found everywhere else. Every price is in writing, after we've seen the job.

Studio City has two housing stocks separated by Ventura Boulevard, and the electrical work is different on each side.
Studio City (ZIP codes 91604, part of 91602) is City of Los Angeles; Burbank, a couple of miles east past Toluca Lake, has its own utility and rules, but nothing on this side of the line does. In the hills south of Ventura Boulevard, the Fire Department requires brush cleared up to 200 feet from any structure and lists plants that may not stand close to a house. That doesn't change an electrical permit for work inside, but it shapes how we route and mount landscape lighting, gate circuits and anything on an exterior wall.
The canyon streets also have old overhead service drops: long spans to the house and weatherheads that haven't been touched in decades. On a panel replacement there, we check the mast and weatherhead on the site visit, so if they need work it's in the written price, not a surprise on the day.
Permits come from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS). A new circuit, an EV charger, a sub-panel or a panel replacement is permitted work, and LADBS will not send an inspector until the permit is issued. We pull it under our license and meet the inspector at the end.
Power comes from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), not Southern California Edison. For repairs, lighting, new outlets and a charger that fits on the existing panel, LADWP is not involved. For a panel or service upgrade it is: the job starts with LADWP's free meter spot, where an Electric Service Representative visits within five to fifteen business days, confirms where the new equipment may go and leaves a sketch at the job (single-family services up to 320 amps can be requested online). When only the meter needs setting, LADWP says that generally happens within ten working days. If the existing LADWP service can carry the new load there are generally no LADWP charges; work in the street, on a transformer or on the lines can add cost and time, and we find that out before you commit.
The permits and utilities guide explains the whole picture for the three counties we serve.
Sherman Oaks, Valley Village, North Hollywood, Toluca Lake and Encino are City of Los Angeles neighborhoods with LADBS permits and LADWP power, and so is Hollywood on the far side of the Cahuenga Pass. Burbank, beyond Toluca Lake, is an independent city with its own Building Division and its own utility, Burbank Water and Power.

No phone quotes and no guessing. A written estimate after we've seen the job, then permitted, inspected work.
Call or send the form. A photo of the panel or the problem helps us come prepared.
We come to your home or business and look at the panel, wiring or site.
Scope, price and timeline in writing before you decide anything.
We pull the permit, coordinate your utility when needed, and finish with the inspection.
If it's in the hills south of Ventura Boulevard, very likely. The Fire Department lists Studio City among the communities in the zone, and its online Fire Zone Map gives the answer for a specific address. Being in the zone means brush clearance up to 200 feet from the house and limits on what grows near it; it doesn't change the permit for electrical work inside, but it does shape how we route and mount anything outdoors.
Before the plans are final. A new kitchen, a second air-conditioning system and a few more bathrooms can double the load on a 1940s service, and LADWP's side of a service upgrade is the longest step in the project. We do the load calculation early, settle the service size with your contractor or designer, and line up the rough-in and final inspections with the rest of the job.
Yes, and it's a common request south of the Boulevard. We trace every feeder from the main service through each sub-panel, label the circuits, check the grounding and bonding, and tell you plainly what you have. That's also when we can tell you whether the service can carry a charger or a pool heater, or whether an upgrade comes first.
Usually, yes. The charger is mounted on an exterior wall or a post with weather-rated equipment, and the circuit runs in conduit from the panel. On hillside lots the distance and the voltage drop over a long run decide the wire size, and the site visit is where we measure it and put the price in writing.
