Electrician in Calabasas

Licensed electricians for Calabasas homes, from an EV charger on the city's expedited permit to a panel upgrade for a 1980s house on one of SCE's shutoff circuits. Free estimates on eligible work, with the price in writing.

Calabasas looks newer than it is. The city's housing report counts 37 percent of its homes as built in the 1980s and roughly another third in the 1960s and 1970s, three in four of them single-family houses, in communities such as Calabasas Park Estates, Calabasas Hills, The Oaks and Mont Calabasas, with older streets in the Calabasas Highlands and Old Town. Those panels are now being asked to carry chargers, heat pumps and batteries they were not sized for.

The other local question is reliability. The city sits in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains and publishes the list of SCE circuits that can be switched off in fire weather. Whether your street is on one of them matters if you're thinking about backup power, and the first question is always what your panel can take.

What's common in Calabasas homes

Most Calabasas houses were built between the 1960s and the end of the 1980s, before EVs, heat pumps and home batteries were part of anyone's plan.

  • 1980s houses. The largest group. Their panels often look roomy on paper, but two chargers, a heat pump and a pool pump together can exceed them, so the load calculation comes first, and load management is often a cheaper answer than a larger service.
  • 1960s and 1970s streets. The city's older neighborhoods, where original panels carry circuits added through decades of remodels. Those deserve a full check before anything large is added.
  • Backup power on shutoff circuits. A battery with solar, a battery alone, or a generator through a transfer switch: each needs a permit and a panel that can take it, and whether it's worth it depends on whether your circuit is on the city's list.

Permits and power in Calabasas

Calabasas (ZIP codes 91301, 91302) is an independent city with its own Building and Safety Division, and Southern California Edison delivers the power.

Permits come from the City of Calabasas Building and Safety Division, which takes applications through its online permit portal and runs an expedited permitting program for EV charging stations. Solar permits go through SolarAPP+, the automated online review the city has adopted. Properties in the high and very high zones of CAL FIRE's fire hazard map, published for Calabasas in March 2025, can be subject to the Chapter 7A wildfire building standards, which matter for some exterior work.

Power is delivered by SCE, and because Calabasas is a Clean Power Alliance member, CPA is the default supplier on the bill; SCE still owns the lines and meter and handles any service change. The city publishes which of the SCE circuits serving it can be de-energized in fire weather: ten are listed, and only Parkmore, up Parkway Calabasas through Calabasas Park Estates and Calabasas Hills Estates, is marked as not subject to shutoffs.

At a December 2025 community meeting in Calabasas, SCE reported 32.6 miles of covered conductor and 3.2 miles of underground line completed in the city, with about 24 more miles of covered conductor and 41 of undergrounding planned. It also said it made the protective settings on high fire risk circuits more sensitive in 2025, which lowers the chance of a fault starting a fire.

Around Calabasas

Agoura Hills and Malibu run their own building departments. Hidden Hills contracts its building and safety work to the firm Transtech, since February 2026, and Westlake Village has its permits issued by LA County Public Works under contract. Topanga is unincorporated, so LA County Public Works issues permits there. All of these are SCE territory. Woodland Hills and West Hills are City of Los Angeles neighborhoods, with LADBS permits and LADWP power.

Questions people ask

Is my Calabasas street on a power shutoff circuit?

The city's PSPS page lists eleven SCE circuits serving Calabasas, ten of which can be shut off in fire weather, including Horntoad (the Calabasas Highlands and part of Park Sorrento), Sorrento (east from Park Sorrento past City Hall) and Plateau (Las Virgenes Canyon Road toward Mulholland and Cold Canyon). Parkmore, along Parkway Calabasas through Calabasas Park Estates, is marked as not subject to shutoffs. SCE's alerts confirm your own circuit, which is worth knowing before you plan backup power.

What is the right backup power for a shutoff?

It depends on what you need to keep running. A battery, with or without solar, needs a permit and the right connection to your panel; solar permits here go through SolarAPP+. A portable generator has to connect through a transfer switch or a listed interlock, never by back-feeding an outlet. Whichever you choose, the panel has to be able to take it, and that's what we check on the site visit. See generator hookups and battery backup.

Is there a faster permit for an EV charger in Calabasas?

Yes. The city runs an expedited permitting program for EV charging stations, which state law requires every city to offer. A charger on an existing panel is a simple submittal that we prepare and file before booking the inspection. If the panel has to grow, SCE is involved and that part takes longer.

Our house was built in the 1980s. Can the panel take two EVs?

A load calculation decides it. Two full-power charger circuits on top of air conditioning and a pool pump rarely fit, while two chargers sharing one circuit, or a charger that throttles back when the house is busy, often do. We give you both options with the numbers before anyone talks about a bigger service.
